Two Homelands – One Journey – Growing Up Between Post Commie Romania and Italy of the 90’s

I was born in a time of profound transition – a period when the echoes of the past mingled with the emotions of new beginnings. My earliest memories are painted with the brushes of two very different yet deeply influential worlds – post communist Romania and the exuberant Italy of the 90’s. Each place offered its own unique flavor of life, becoming home in its own way, with all the beauty, chaos and inevitable imperfections that such systems bring.

In Romania, the air was filled with both a sense of relief and the weight of long suppressed dreams. The country was emerging from decades of rigid control into an era promising freedom and hope. There was a tangible euphoria as old restrictions crumbled, opening up endless possibilities for self expression and growth. Yet, amid this jubilation, there was also a rawness – a messy, sometimes chaotic awakening where remnants of the past coexisted with the sweet taste of liberation. This period was not only about embracing freedom but also about finding ourselves through confusion and shady systems.

In contrast, my experiences in Italy during the 90’s were a celebration of life in its most sensory form. Italy at that time epitomized la dolce vita – a land where music, fashion and culinary delights converged into a vibrant symphony of pleasure. The streets buzzed with an infectious energy and every corner seemed to offer a new adventure. People actually smiled and the playgrounds were whole.  As a child, I was swept away by the allure of this lifestyle – the rhythmic flow of Italian conversation, the vibrant colors of daily life and the sheer abundance of art, toys, gadgets, food and culture. Beneath this exuberance, however, lay a different kind of chaos – a system driven by consumerism and instant gratification that, over time, began to reveal its own set of flaws and limitations.

Oscillating between these two universes taught me invaluable lessons. In Romania, I learned the importance of resilience and the beauty of rebirth, witnessing a society in transformation where every small victory felt like a personal triumph. In Italy, I discovered the joy of living life to its fullest, savoring every moment while also recognizing that the pursuit of pleasure sometimes masked deeper imperfections.

Both places, with their distinctive charms and flaws, became integral parts of my identity. They offered unique perspectives on what it means to call a place home – a blend of tradition and modernity, deep cultural roots intertwined with the inevitable march of progress. Yet, as I look back, I see that both systems, in their own ways, eventually began to feel outdated or even corrupted, relics of an era struggling to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

This journey of moving between two contrasting realities has been a profound teacher. It has shown me that home is not a fixed location but a state of being shaped by our experiences, memories and inner truths. By embracing the lessons of both places, I have come to appreciate the transformative power of change and the importance of authenticity.

In this blog, I will continue to share my nomadic priestess stories – tales of sacred travel, insights gleaned from the crossroads of history and culture and the deep inner shifts that occur when we dare to live a life less ordinary. If you’re ready to explore with me, I invite you to join in the journey. The adventure is just beginning.
